Capacity planning

Capacity planning looks like black magic sometimes. A CTO or CFO decided what technique or cost without deep understanding of rapid changes of software and hardware today.

So, how to attack it?

  • Don't be afraid, you cannot be friend with everyone
  • No matter how much you know, you are wrong too
  • Use facts first, second guts feeling (even you can be right)
  • Reserve your result with +-20%
  • Have a plan B. It is your insurance!
  • Discuss your idea with other seniors people, they will always agree and disagree
  • Be brave, if you want to consider everything, you won't progress at all!
  • Don't believe what vendor tells you, nor Internet.
  • Last and most important: understand the complexity first.
  • Every change that involve human will be immortally hard to defeat
